When the current farm bill expires September 30, producers aren’t likely to see an immediate effect, according to UNL Extension Public Policy Specialist Brad Lubben. He spoke with Market Journal’s Jeff Wilkerson this week about various outcomes, depending on when the new farm bill is approved.

Current farm programs will run through the current crop year, Lubben says, which means any changes related to corn, soybean, wheat and most other Nebraska crops wouldn’t occur until 2013’s crop. For dairy, however, the crop year ends December 31. When the new farm bill is enacted, Lubben says to expect a heavy emphasis on risk management, particularly crop insurance.
