Nebraska Wheat Crop 15% Below Last Year; Oats Lowest since 1868 - UNL CropWatch, July 11, 2012

July 11, 2012

Based on July 1 conditions, Nebraska's 2012 winter wheat crop is forecast at 55.4 million bushels, up 9% from last month’s forecast but 15% below last year’s crop, according to the Nebraska Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Average yield is forecast at 42 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from last month but 3 bushels below last year. The production increase from last month is based on the combination of a higher yield forecast as well as more acres expected for harvest as published in the Acreage report released on June 29, 2012.

Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.32 million acres, unchanged from the Acreage report but 9% less than last year. Wheat harvest is running three weeks ahead of average.

Oat production is forecast at 1.2 million bushels, down 8% from last year and the lowest since 1868. Acreage for harvest, at 25,000 acres, is up 5,000 acres from 2011. Yield, at 48 bushels per acre, is forecast to be 17 bushels per acre below a year ago.
