Western Nebraska sees Pockets of Freeze and Frost - UNL CropWatch, Sept. 21, 2011

September 21, 2011

Frost to freeze conditions developed across the northern Panhandle during the early morning hours of September 21.

Hard freeze conditions (<28°F) were reported at the Alliance Airport, while moderate freeze conditions (29-30°F) were reported at Broadwater, Harrison, and Harrisburg. Light frost (31-32°F) were reported at Chadron and Gordon.

These are the only locations that have reported frost/freeze conditions, but it is likely that areas prone to cold air drainage will have experienced low temperatures of 32°F or less. It is probable that pockets of freeze damage did occur to late maturing crops, but the lack of significant cropping acreage in the impacted region likely limited yield losses.
