On this week's Market Journal Alan Mussell, senior research associate with the George Morris Centre, suggests developing agricultural policy around the strengths of our agricultural sector such as its strong export markets.

• Wheat Markets – Frayne Olson, North Dakota State University Extension agricultural economist, says the next key crop report will be August 11 when he expects spring wheat acres will be revised downward.
• Goss’s Wilt in Nebraska Corn – Tamra Jackson, UNL extension plant pathologist, says Goss’s Wilt is showing up in many parts of the state. This is a bacterial disease in corn and cannot be controlled with fungicides.
• Soybean Aphids – Bob Wright, UNL Extension entomologist, says now is the time to start scouting for soybean aphids, especially if the weather cools a little from the current heat wave. Don’t apply insecticide unless your field meets the threshold, as it will kill beneficial insects that prey on aphids.
• Hot Days Ahead – Al Dutcher, UNL Extension statewide climatologist, says temperatures may be in the low 100s throughout the week.

Next week (July 22)

The drought in the southern U.S. is causing some ranchers to sell their beef cows, which could lead to reductions in the national cowherd. Fluctuating grain markets continue to be a risk for feeders. This week Market Journal will discuss the mid-summer situation in the cattle markets.
