Training on land application of manure will be available Jan. 27 and Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CST at extension offices across the state. Livestock and crop farmers will learn the latest information on how to turn manure nutrients into better crop yields while protecting the environment.

Livestock producers with livestock waste control facility permits received or renewed since April 1998 must be certified and are encouraged to attend. Farm staff responsible for implementing the farm's nutrient plan also are encouraged, but not required, to attend.

The workshops will help livestock producers use the nutrient management planning requirements of Nebraska's Department of Environmental Quality regulations and capture the economic value of manure, said Leslie Johnson, UNL animal manure management (AMM) project coordinator. Participants who attend the day-long event will receive initial NDEQ Land Application Training Certification.

This in-depth, one-day class targets newly permitted livestock operations, Johnson said.

The workshop also is appropriate for agricultural advisers and others interested in best management practices for manure management.

Permitted livestock operations that have already attended this initial training, but need re-certification, should plan to attend the 2011 North American Manure Expo in Norfolk on July 20.

A $50 fee per farm (includes one farm representative) will be charged for the Land Application Training Archive workshops plus a $10 fee for each additional participant to cover local costs including lunch.

These workshops are sponsored by the UNL Extension Animal Manure Management workgroup which is dedicated to helping livestock and crop producers better use the state's manure resources for agronomic and environmental benefits.
