The 2010 Dry Bean Field Tour, scheduled for August 17, will start at the Mitchell Ag Lab, located on Experiment Farm Road several
miles north of the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottslbuff.

The Field Tour is co-sponsored by the Nebraska Dry Bean Growers’ Association and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Following a welcome message and legislative update at 9:15 a.m., tours of the Ag Lab research plots will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a field tour at the Panhandle REC, and then lunch at 12:30 p.m. To get to the Mitchell Ag Lab from highways 71 and 26 on the northwest side of Scottsbluff: Drive 4 miles north on Highway 71 to Experiment Farm Road, then drive west for 1.5 miles.

Field Day Presentations

The tour will include presentations on field research and demonstration projects directed to dry edible beans, including the following topics and UNL presenters:

• Effect of heavy residue on direct harvest field loss with John Smith, extension machinery systems engineer
• Dry bean market classes for western Nebraska with Jim Schild, extension educator
• Will copper application effectively manage bacterial wilt? with Bob Harveson, plant pathologist
• Update on Coyne and elite lines and new releases, plus progress on disease and drought tolerance with Carlos Urrea, dry bean breeding specialist
• Ascochyta blight resistance in garbanzo beans with Carlos Urrea
• Dry bean yield in a crop rotation using plow, zone till and no till with Dean Yonts, extension irrigation specialist)
• Variety and row spacing impact on direct harvest of Great Northern beans with John Smith, extension machinery systems engineer
• Exploring insect resistance in dry edible beans with Jeff Bradshaw, extension entomologist
• Weed control in dry beans Bob Wilson, extension weed specialist
