CropWatch April 2, 2010: Market Journal: Analyst Recommends Watching for Grain Sale Opportunities

April 2, 2010

On this week's Market Journal Roy Smith, Plattsmouth farmer and grain consultant, says producers should be watching the grain market closely with an eye toward sales opportunities, in spite of the bearish impact of this week's USDA planting intentions and grain stock reports. He visits with program host Doug Jose about what to consider.

Also on this week's Market Journal:

  • Charles Wortmann, UNL Extension nutrient management specialist, recommends using nitrification inhibitors when applying nitrogen in wet areas.
  • Jenny Rees, UNL Extension educator; and Paul Jasa, UNL Extension engineer, discuss planting tips and recommend a corn planting depth of at least two inches to decrease stand problems later in the season.
  • Dr. Richard Randle, UNL Extension cow/calf veterinarian, reminds beef producers of the potential for trichomoniasis and recommends they have bulls tested if they are not from your ranch or if current calf crop has problems.
  • Al Dutcher, UNL Extension climatologist, says the eight to 14-day forecast calls for below normal temperatures and precipitation. Dutcher says temperatures will be in the 50s but the state will see substantial precipitation.

Next week on Market Journal Ron Plain, University of Missouri Extension ag economist, will analyze the hog markets and Jenny Rees, UNL Extension educator, will discuss recent ISU research on planting dates and seed population rates for corn and soybeans.
