The following article discusses changes in insecticide registrations since last spring. For reasons of space, not all label restrictions are included. Please refer to the label to use these products according to label instructions.

EPA: Fipronil Cancellation Order and Amendment to Terminate Uses

EPA announced February 3 that all uses of fipronil as an infurrow insecticide in corn have been cancelled. This affects Regent 4SC, Regent 80W, and Regent 1.5G.

The registrant may continue to sell or distribute existing stocks of fipronil products with previously approved labeling until May 15, 2011. Persons other than the registrant may continue to sell or distribute existing stocks of fipronil products with previously approved labeling until such stocks are exhausted. Persons other than the registrant may use existing stocks of fipronil products until existing stocks are exhausted. Any use of existing stocks must be in a manner consistent with the previously approved labeling for that product.

Amvac Chemical Counter 20G Smartbox and SmartChoice 5G

AMVAC Chemical Corporation has received federal registrations for two new soil insecticide products containing active ingredients that have been in the soil insecticide marketplace for many years.

Counter® 20G Smartbox® contains the active ingredient terbufos. This formulation, which will replace the 15G formulation over the next several years, is not related to the CR formulation once marketed and sold across the Corn Belt. This product will be delivered through the SmartBox and Lock 'n Load application systems. Recommended rates of application for Counter Smartbox 20G vary depending on whether a Bt corn rootworm hybrid is planted. If a Bt corn rootworm hybrid (field corn) is planted, the insecticide may be applied in a band over the row or in furrow at a rate of 4.5 to 6.0 ounces per 1,000 feet of row. According to the label, "Rates less than 6 ounces per 1,000 feet of row are recommended for suppression only, unless used in combination with a corn hybrid containing in-plant corn rootworm protection traits." Please consult the Counter Smartbox 20G label for more detailed product information and application instructions.

SmartChoice™ 5G contains the active ingredients chlorethoxyfos (4.3%) and bifenthrin (0.7%). Chlorethoxyfos is an organophosphate insecticide that has the same active ingredient as Fortress. SmartChoice should be delivered in-furrow at planting. When used at a rate of 3.0 to 3.5 ounces per 1,000 feet of row, the product "aids in the control of corn rootworm larvae when used in combination with corn hybrids containing in-plant protection against corn rootworm larvae." A rate of 4.5 to 5.0 ounces per 1,000 feet of row should be used against corn rootworm larvae when a non-Bt corn rootworm hybrid is planted. For more detailed information, consult the product label.

Dow AgroSciences Lorsban-4E and Intrepid 2F

Several label changes have been made to Lorsban®-4E (chlorpyrifos) for use on corn and sweet corn, including:

  • Pre-plant incorporation and at-planting T-band application at up to 1.3 lb ai/acre has been deleted from the Lorsban-4E label.
  • Corn uses requiring more than 1.3 lb ai/acre have been removed.
  • The preharvest interval (PHI) across all corn uses (including corn grain and sweet corn ears) was changed to 21 days and the 14-day grazing restriction was eliminated.

A supplemental label for Intrepid® 2F (methoxyfenozide) has been approved for control of European corn borer, western bean cutworm, and true armyworm on popcorn.

  • Apply at 4-8 fl oz per acre.
  • Do not apply more than 8 fl oz per acre per application or 64 fl oz (1 lb ai) per acre per season.
  • Do not harvest within 21 days of application to grain and stover. There is no pre-harvest interval for popcorn forage.
  • Do not apply to popcorn by aerial ultra low volume (ULV) applications.

Syngenta Avicta Complete Corn

Syngenta has registered a new seed treatment, Avicta® Complete Corn, as a nematicide/insecticide/fungicide combination product. The insecticide is Cruiser® (thiamethoxam) which is applied at the 500 mg ai/kernel rate. This will provide a broad spectrum of activity against early season corn insects, including wireworms, chinch bugs, seedcorn maggot, southern corn leaf beetle, corn flea beetle, black cutworm, thrips, grape colaspis, southern green stinkbug, seed corn beetle, and corn leaf aphid. The nematicide (Avicta; active ingredient, abamectin) helps protect against the major early-season plant parasitic nematodes found in corn. Seed treatment fungicides include Apron XL®, Maxin XL®, and Dynasty®.

Dupont Coragen

Dupont Coragen® insecticide, which is labeled for use on corn and forages, contains the active ingredient rynaxypyr (chlorantraniliprole) is now labeled for foliar use on several crops of interest in Nebraska. It is primarily used for control of lepidopterous pests. Rynaxypyr is an anthranilic diamide insecticide whose mode of action is interruption of normal muscle contraction.

For field corn and popcorn, use 3.5-5.0 fl oz Coragen per acre for control of corn earworm, beet armyworm, European corn borer, and fall armyworm. It has a 14-day preharvest interval and 4-hour restricted entry interval. Minimum interval between treatments is 7 days.

For sweet corn and seed corn, use 3.5-5.0 fl oz Coragen per acre for control of corn earworm, beet armyworm, European corn borerm and fall armyworm. There is a 1-day preharvest interval and a 4-hour restricted entry interval. Minimum interval between treatments is 1 day.

For legume vegetables (except soybean), including Phaseolus and Vigna beans, use 3.5-5.0 fl oz Coragen per acre for control of corn earworm, beet armyworm, European corn borer, and fall armyworm. There is a 1-day preharvest interval and a 4-hour restricted entry interval. Minimum interval between treatments is 3 days.

For grass forage, fodder, and hay, use 3.5-5.0 fl oz Coragen per acre for control of corn earworm, beet armyworm, and fall armyworm. There is no preharvest interval and a 4-hour restricted entry interval. Minimum interval between treatments is 7 days.

For non-grass animal feeds (including alfalfa, clover, etc.), use 3.5-5.0 fl oz Coragen per acre for control of alfalfa looper and beet armyworm. There is no preharvest interval and a 4-hour restricted entry interval. Do not apply more than once per cutting.

Valent: Supplemental Label for Belay on Soybeans

Belay® insecticide is now labeled for foliar use on soybeans. It is effective against several common pests in Nebraska including aphids, bean leaf beetles, and stink bugs. The active ingredient is clothianidin, a neonicotinoid (Group 4A) insecticide.

It is labeled on soybeans at 3-4 fl oz per acre, with the following restrictions:

  • Restricted entry interval (REI) is 12 hours.
  • Do not apply foliar treatments less than 7 days apart.
  • Do not apply within 21 days of harvest.
  • In fields treated with a neonicotinoid seed treatment, do not make foliar applications of Belay within 45 days of planting.
  • Do not apply more than 0.2 lb a.i. of clothianidin per acre per season.
  • Do not graze or feed soybean forage and hay to livestock.
