Risk Management Meetings March 8-10

Learn more about crop risk management options and visit with experts at a series of March meetings in south central and southeast Nebraska. With the March 15 crop insurance deadline just around the corner, these meetings offer producers an opportunity to address those last minute questions.

These Risk Management Updates, sponsored by UNL Extension's Farmers and Ranchers College, include four you can attend in person and one that can be accessed on-line.

Guest speaker at all the meetings will be Steve Johnson, a farm management field specialist at Iowa State University, who specializes in helping farmers assess risk management options and develop an integrated strategy. Johnson will be presenting information and answering questions on the  

  • 2010 crop supply/demand and price outlook,
  • 2010 crop insurance updates just in time for the March 15 deadline, and
  • SURE and ACRE programs and decision-making, now that some program information has been clarified.

Guest speakers will be Johnson and Lubben. The webinar will be available at connect.extension.iastate.edu/nebraska/. This link will take participants to a login page where they can follow the prompts to join other participants. Before the conference participants are urged to test their ability to access the Breeze by going to http://breeze.extension.iastate.edu/common/help/en/support/meeting_test.htm.

Lubben will discuss the farm bill, Johnson will have a crop insurance update, and both will share ag policy information.

March 9, 9 a.m. - noon, Fillmore County Fairgrounds in Geneva
Speakers will include Johnson and UNL Extension Educator Tim Lemmons.

Lemmons will discuss using farm financial ratios and specifically identifying trends that indicate a developing problem. Too often producers are told their ratios are "in the red" but are never quite sure how they got there. There will be an analysis of common financial ratio problems, and Lemmons will show participants how to improve their ratios using proven techniques, tricks and trade secrets.
