Weed Management Field Day June 29 at Clay Center

Growers, crop consultants and educators are encouraged to attend Nebraska Extension's Weed Management Field Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 29 at the South Central Agricultural Laboratory near Clay Center.

The field day will include on-site demonstrations of new technology and new herbicides for corn, soybean and sorghum. (See details below.) An early morning tour will focus on weed management in soybeans followed by a tour of weed management in corn and sorghum. Field experiments will provide information for weed control options with various herbicide programs.

"Several new herbicides and technologies are coming to the market, including Enlist Corn and Soybean, Roundup Ready 2 Xtend Soybean, Balance Bean and INZEN sorghum" said Extension Weed Management Specialist Amit Jhala. 

The field day will provide an opportunity to identify several broadleaf and grass weeds commonly found in corn and soybean fields in Nebraska.

Three Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) Continuing Education Units are available in the integrated pest management category.

There is no cost to attend the field day, but participants are asked to preregister at http://agronomy.unl.edu/weedresistmgt.

The South Central Agricultural Laboratory is five miles west of the intersection of Highways 14 and 6, or 13 miles east of Hastings on Highway 6. GPS coordinates for the field day site are 40.57539, -98.13776.

Weed Management Field Day Tour Details

Tour 1: On-Site Demonstration of New Technology/Herbicides for Weed Control in Soybean

1. Comparison of Herbicide Programs for Weed Control in Soybean: Unbiased comparison of several herbicide programs of different companies for weed control in glyphosate-resistant soybean. Several new herbicides in soybean will be discussed.
2. Herbicide Programs in Roundup Ready 2Xtend Soybean: Dicamba plus glyphosate-resistant soybean will be commercialized in the near future. Understand dicamba based weed control program and crop safety in dicamba-resistant soybean. Field experiment will provide information for weed control options using several herbicide combinations with dicamba plus glyphosate.
3. Herbicide Programs in Enlist Soybean: Enlist soybean has been deregulated and will be available for commercial production in the near future. Herbicide programs will be discussed for weed control in Enlist soybean.
4. Herbicide Programs in Balance Bean: Balance Bean soybean is tolerant to Balance Flexx, glyphosate, and Liberty. Herbicide programs will be discussed for weed control in Balance Bean.
5. Herbicide Programs in Bolt Soybean: Bolt soybean is tolerant to ALS inhibiting herbicides. Herbicide programs will be discussed for weed control in Bolt Bean.
6. Herbicide Programs for Weed Control in Conventional Soybean: Several herbicide programs with different modes of action will be compared for broad-spectrum weed control in conventional soybean.
7. Weed Identification: Challenge yourself to identify weeds! Tips to identify the most common broadleaf and grass weeds will be provided.

Tour 2: On-Site Demonstration of New Technology/Herbicides for Weed Control in Corn and Sorghum

1. Comparison of Herbicide Programs for Weed Control in Corn: Unbiased comparison of several herbicide programs by different companies for weed control in glyphosate plus glufosinate-resistant corn. Several new herbicides in corn will be discussed.
2. Herbicide Programs in 2,4-D plus glyphosate-resistant (Enlist) Corn: Enlist corn is deregulated and will be available for commercial production in near future. Herbicide programs will be discussed for weed control in Enlist corn.
3. Dose response of Acuron applied PRE in Conventional and No-till Corn: Acuron, a new herbicide with four active ingredients, including new bicyclopyrone is recently registered in corn. Weed control efficacy of Acuron will be compared with other residual herbicides in conventional and no-till corn.
4. Anthem Maxx applied PRE in Corn: Anthem Maxx is a premix of Zidua and Cadet for weed control in corn. Weed control efficacy will be compared when Anthem Maxx will be applied PRE and early POST in corn.
5. DiFlexx DUO for Weed Control in Corn: DiFlexx DUO is a premix of DiFlexx and Laudis with CSI safener. The project will demonstrate weed control and crop safety with DiFlexx DUO applied at different rates compared with other POST herbicides in corn.
6. INZEN Sorghum: INZEN sorghum is tolerant to ALS inhibiting herbicidenicosulfuron (Zest). Herbicide programs will be discussed for weed control in INZEN sorghum.
7. Weed Identification: Challenge yourself to identify weeds! Tips to identify the most common broadleaf and grass weeds found in corn and soybean fields.
